對於中國解放軍而言，現在的局面也是史無前例的——在習近平上台前，根據公開資料統計，中共歷史上被處理的上將僅有一位黃永勝，他在1971年因林彪叛逃事件牽連而被處理。鄧小平、江澤民、胡錦濤時代都無上將被處理。習近平上台後，已有25名上將被開除黨籍、軍籍，其中除了徐才厚、郭伯雄等八人在習上台之前就已是上將，其餘都是他任內提拔，又在他任內被查。
